PHILSURIN Strengthens Sugarcane Breeding Through Global Variety Exchange

For more than two decades, PHILSURIN has been actively strengthening the Philippine sugarcane industry through its Global Variety Exchange Program, a strategic initiative that enables the institute to access and evaluate promising sugarcane genetic materials from leading breeding institutions around the world.

While PHILSURIN is recognized for developing improved sugarcane varieties for Filipino farmers, the institute also collaborates with international research organizations to introduce new genetic resources that can contribute to higher productivity, improved sugar recovery, enhanced disease resistance, and better adaptability to changing environmental conditions.

Through partnerships with sugarcane breeding institutions across countries such as the United States, Australia, Thailand, Brazil, France, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, South Africa, and Mauritius, PHILSURIN continuously broadens the genetic diversity available for local breeding and variety development.

How the Variety Exchange Process Works

Before any foreign variety can be introduced to Philippine farms, it must undergo a comprehensive evaluation process to ensure safety, performance, and suitability under local conditions.

1. Acquisition of New Genetic Materials
PHILSURIN acquires promising sugarcane varieties through international genetic exchange and research collaborations.

2. Quarantine and Screening
All incoming materials undergo strict pre- and post-quarantine procedures to ensure they are free from pests, diseases, and other biosecurity risks.

3. Initial Evaluation
Varieties are first assessed in research stations where weak performers are eliminated from further testing.

4. Multi-Location Field Trials
Promising varieties are planted and evaluated in different agro-climatic conditions across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to determine their adaptability and performance.

5. Selection and Analysis
Researchers analyze data on yield, sugar content, disease resistance, ratooning ability, and overall stability.

6. Variety Release and Distribution
Only varieties that consistently demonstrate superior performance are considered for release and eventual distribution to farmers through industry networks and extension programs.

7. Continuous Improvement
Outstanding varieties may also be utilized as parent materials in future breeding programs, helping PHILSURIN develop even better varieties for the next generation of sugarcane farmers.

Recent Acquisitions Strengthen Genetic Diversity

This year, PHILSURIN expanded its collection of genetic resources through the acquisition of new sugarcane materials from VISACANE (CIRAD, Montpellier, France). Additionally, ten distinct varieties originating from breeding institutions in China, Thailand, Sudan, Argentina, Pakistan, Barbados, and Guadeloupe entered the institute’s quarantine and evaluation pipeline.

These materials were initially brought to the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Institute of Plant Breeding for pre-quarantine observation as part of the country’s biosecurity protocols before undergoing further evaluation by PHILSURIN.

Why This Matters

The future of the sugar industry depends on the continuous development of better sugarcane varieties capable of meeting emerging challenges such as climate variability, pest and disease pressures, and increasing production demands.

Through its Global Variety Exchange Program, PHILSURIN is able to:

  • Introduce valuable genetic diversity into local breeding programs.
  • Develop varieties that are better suited to Philippine growing conditions.
  • Improve productivity and sugar recovery.
  • Enhance resistance to pests and diseases.
  • Strengthen the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the Philippine sugar industry.

By combining global genetic resources with local scientific expertise, PHILSURIN ensures that Filipino farmers have access to improved technologies and varieties that can help increase farm productivity and profitability.

PHILSURIN is more than a research institute—we are a catalyst. Together with our local and international partners, we are building a future-ready, resilient sugarcane industry rooted in innovation and sustainable partnership.
